Prof. Alvaro Kaempfer
Research areas: interdisciplinary approaches to the political, historical, and cultural convergences of colonialism and globalization in Latin American writings.
Spanish, LACLS, and Globalization Studies Prof. Alvaro Kaempfer recently earned full professorship, marking his tenth anniversary of teaching at Gettysburg College. A native of Chile, Kaempfer pursued a master's degree in humanities at the Universidad de Santiago de Chile, where he was also a high school teacher for five years. He then moved to the United States in 1994 to obtain his doctorate from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.
In and out of the classroom, Kaempfer focuses his scholarly work on exploring, researching and publishing about the cultural and historical legacies of the global colonial experiences that frame the political and cultural present-day. Since arriving to Gettysburg College, students’ enthusiasm for engaging, challenging, and inclusive dialogue has stood out to him. “I learn probably as much as my students in every class, every semester, and through every personal discussion,” said Kaempfer.
