CWI Director Peter Carmichael will speak on his new book, The War for the Common Soldier, on Thursday, January 24 as part of the Loudoun Museum’s reopening weekend. Carmichael’s lecture will accompany the opening of the Museum's new exhibit, "Caught in the Maelstrom of Civil War: Loudoun County Divided." A preview of the exhibit will be open from 5:00 to 6:00 pm, and the lecture will follow at 6:30.
How did Civil War soldiers endure the brutal and unpredictable existence of army life during the conflict? This question lies at the heart of Carmichael's sweeping new study of men at war. Based on close examination of the letters and records left behind by individual soldiers from both the North and the South, Carmichael will explore with the audience the totality of the Civil War experience--the marching, the fighting, the boredom, the idealism, the exhaustion, the punishments, and the frustrations of being away from families who often faced their own dire circumstances.
The event is free and open to the public, but attendance is limited. Register here to guarantee your seat.
