Gettysburg College now uses a service called Duo Security to provide two-factor authentication (2FA) for the college E-mail, PeopleSoft and other Single Sign-On applications. Login attempts to these applications from off-campus or the student network (gbcwifi) will be secured with 2FA, which provides an added layer of security to help protect college accounts and data.
Two-Factor Authentication
Due to the increase in email phishing attacks, and other issues such as weak or re-used passwords, passwords are increasingly easy to compromise. Two-factor Authentication provides an extra layer of security beyond a username and password. This helps protect you and the college, even if your password has been compromised. With Duo Push technology, you will be alerted immediately if someone is trying to log into a Duo protected application with your credentials.
How Duo 2FA works
After signing into one of our 2FA protected applications, you will be prompted to confirm the login. Login confirmation can be in the form of a Duo Push notification using the Duo Mobile smartphone app, SMS text message, voice call, or one-time passcode. It is possible you are already familiar with this process from other online services such as Gmail or online banking.
Keep in mind that this process only affects logins from off-campus or gbcwifi. Any login attempts from machines connected to the campus network will continue to operate as usual.
Enrolling in Duo Two-Factor Authentication
Enrollment is easy. You will receive an email from Duo Security with an enrollment link. Most modern browsers are supported, but Chrome and Firefox provide the best experience. It is also recommended that you install the mobile app before clicking the enrollment link if you plan on using a smartphone or tablet.
All faculty, administrators and staff are required to enroll in the Duo service. Even if you don’t use Outlook Web App or the other Duo protected college applications, it is imperative that you enroll in Duo to protect your account should your credentials become compromised.
Enrolling Multiple Devices
Using a smartphone with the Duo mobile app is considered best practice and should be the primary method for using 2FA. We recommend enrolling at least two devices, in case there are accessibility issues with a device. Supported devices include: smartphones (Android, iOS, Windows), tablets (iOS, Android), cell phones, landlines and hardware tokens.
