Dear Campus Community,
I am writing with heartbreaking and stunning news. Early this morning, our beloved friend and colleague, Pete Carmichael, passed away from a sudden illness. His wife, Beth; his children; and his mom were with him.
Pete's impact on this community and in the community of Civil War scholars has been immeasurable. He has helped us to see the Civil War through a broader and more nuanced lens, and along the way guided legions of Gettysburg College students into the field of public history. The Pohanka Internship Program, which places students in interpretive, cultural resource management, and archaeology positions in public history sites, has thrived under Pete's leadership and exemplifies his commitment to our students and America's understanding of its past.
We will sorely miss Pete's leadership and dedication, but more than that we will sorely miss Pete. He very much helped make this campus the special place that it is. We will forever cherish his presence in our lives.
If you find yourself in need of support, we encourage you to check in with a trusted support person. Students can contact an on-call crisis counselor through Campus Safety (717-337-6911) and employees can connect with WellSpan EAP for counseling support (1-800-673-2514).
We will update the community when we have more information about a memorial service. Please join me in sending our deepest condolences to Beth and Pete’s entire family.
In sadness,
Bob Iuliano
President
