Philosophy Major

Effective with the Class of 2025

Nine courses are required for the PHIL major.

Two Philosophy Core Courses

  • One 100-level Philosophy course or a FYS taught by a Philosophy faculty member.
  • One from either Logic (PHIL 211) or Philosophical Methods (PHIL 212).

Three Courses from the “texts in context” series

  • One course in the history of traditions commonly taught in the US. Choose from PHIL 205, 206, 207, 208, or 225.
  • One course in the history of traditions less commonly taught in the US. Choose from PHIL 215, 216, 240, 255, 355, 366 Topic: Zhuangzi, or another designated course.
  • One additional course from either category.

One Ethics/ Justice Course

  • One from PHIL 105, 115, 125, 131, 140, 150, 153, 219, 222, 224, 226, 230, 247, or 338.

Two Electives

  • Two Philosophy electives at the 300-level or above

Senior Seminar

  • PHIL 400

Notes:

  • Any 100-level Philosophy course, or a FYS course taught by a Philosophy faculty member is a pre-requisite for 200, 300, or 400-level courses in the department.
  • Each course can only be used to satisfy one of the major requirements.
  • No more than two 100-level courses may be used to fulfill major requirements.
